Oturehua - Central Otago

The old general store in Oturehua brought back many memories of the General Store my Grandfather and then my father owned in Hanmer Springs. This blog post is for my Dad, which I'm sure will bring back a few nostalgic memories looking at the display of products and the old shop equipment.

This historical Gilchrists Store has been serving the public since 1902, making it the longest continuously trading store in New Zealand.

It's like a museum but still operates as a store, where commodities can be bought (such as bread, milk, ice-creams, fresh fruit & veggies, pies, and some groceries).

Across the road from the store was the Oturehua hotel ... I liked the sign out the front!

  1. Park up at the Oturehura Pub, get yah Bike off the Back and Cycle back towards Ranfurly for about 1-2 km you'll come to a Road Leading up to the Old Globe Gold Mine well worth the Ride as one day it maybe all gone ! Macraes Gold Mine is just Over The Hill .Cycle back to the pub for a Pie & Pint . Or Carry onto Hayes Engineering Works Maker's of The World Famous Hayes Windmill & Hayes Fence Wire Strainer !(same family as E. Hayes & Son's Hardware Invercargill).

    1. Thanks Karl, we've left the area now but will add those to our list of places to check out in the future. We did go and see Macraes Gold Mine while we were staying in Waipiata, and we went had had a couple of meals (yummy) at the Waipiata Hotel. Such a great area with so much to see.
