Delightful 'Dongal Downs'

“Donegal Downs” – what a beautiful place to stay. Appealing, attractive charming and delightful are a handful of words that pop into mind when describing this little slice of paradise.

The friendly hosts Darryl and Jo Dellow have set aside a secluded area tucked down the back of their 3-acre lifestyle property. It’s one of NZMCA’s newest POPs (#7763), and was ready to receive their first guests in March.

The stunning cottage gardens were one of the many endearing features we noticed on our arrival. They’re something you’d expect to see in a garden magazine or to be hired out for a wedding.

Following the short drive ahead we arrived at a flat, fully fenced, mown area suitable for any sized mobile-home.

A couple of rustic garden sheds stood to one side. They’re a work in progress as Jo has plans to decorate them with aged artifacts. And from what Jo and Darryl have created so far, I’m looking forward to a return visit to see how they turn out.

When Darryl’s not working or looking after their property, he’s pottering about restoring or developing something. A colorful, fun-size playhouse ideal for entertaining visiting children is an example of that.

Just a stones throw away, in another paddock, were three miniature ponies (Glory, Nemo and Latte). They’re placid, friendly and treated like royalty. Later in the afternoon they were lead to their evening paddock with a shed for shelter. To keep the evening chill at bay they had covers put on, then each pony waited patiently beside a food tray for their snack. It’s obvious they knew the routine.

Then there were the free-range chickens; I wish all chooks were cared for like this. They have a large grassy area to roam and a chook house for shelter and warmth. The Dellows generously gave us some free-range eggs. Yummm, that dark, yellow yolk went down a treat.

Jo's mum feeding the chooks.
Guests can put food scraps into the chook's bucket.
Two roosters had been added to the brood to keep magpies and falcons away. A couple of the Dellow’s doves were attacked while in flight by falcons, the roosters have been successful at keeping the doves and the hens safe.

Being obvious pet lovers, the Dellows also give dogs a warm welcome. As soon as we arrived our dogs were relaxed and content. It’s a well-known fact that dogs are sensitive to their surroundings and even Paddy who is usually unsure of new places, was confident and at ease.

Oakly watching the ponies.

If you’re searching for a place to stay where you can be guaranteed a relaxing, enjoyable and peaceful time for yourself and your pet, we highly recommend ‘Donegal Downs’. It’s a gem and like all gems once word gets out, will be sought after by many.
