Man-Made Lake

Lake Hood is a recreational man-made lake. It's located about 6kms east of Tinwald, Ashburton.

The lake has an eight lane rowing course and seperate jet-skiing and water-skiing areas.

Initially Lake Hood was designed to provide an aquatic recreational resource for mid-canterbury people. After 14 years of planning and development the park was officially opened in 2011.

As we walked near the edge of the lake we noticed 'things' protruding from the water. At first Bernie thought they were floating sticks but as we walked closer to get a better look the 'things' turned out to be fins and quickly disappeared.

Turns out these fish are Grass carp and were introduced to Lake Hood as weed control. Grass carp are a herbivorous fish native to Asia and were imported into N.Z. in the 1960s for weed control. They're all tagged so if you do happen to foul hook one - let it go.

It was good to see Paradise ducklings paddling across the lake in large numbers.

Lake Hood's Park is still being developed with plans to add 1,100 additional acres to the reserve, which will include beaches, canals and islands.
It's a fabulous area that offers more than just water sports, such as bike trails, walking tracks and the stunning lakeside restaurant 'The Lakehouse'.
